July 2004 - December 2005| Phase I
Masonry Restoration and Steel Lintel Installation
<Back to the Main Page>
As tuckpointing and re-pointing of the existing masonry
continues, the building begins to recapture it's original masonry character
(above). It's previous character, while very uniform (below),
would have required costly maintenance and continuous painting. Once cleaned
and fully repaired, the masonry exterior should be virtually maintenance
free for many years to come.

The existing waterwheel area (below left) and water
raceway entrance (below right) have been exposed after the demolition.
The raceway entrance will remain intact, providing a chaseway under the
building for mechanical, electrical and plumbing components.

The South and East (above) elevations are the most
complete. The steel lintel installtion for future openings can be seen
in progress (above and below). The lintels have star shaped washers
to blend in more naturally with the historic nature of the building (below
right). Openings below the lintels to a future stair tower will replace
the windows (below left).

One of the most exciting aspects of seeing a building
under construction like this one is that through photographs we can see
the changes from "before to after." The following photographs
show the before condition on the left and the "in progress"
condition on the right.
An almost seamless transition between old and new. The
haze from the lime in the mortar will be removed with the final cleaning.

Below is another set of windows and doors that have been
reconfigured to provide window openings for future use.

Below is looking at the Northeast corner before and in
progress.

Below left is a picture of the North facade after the
North addition demolition. Below right is a picture showing the removal
of the paint, plaster and tar from the attached building (Masonry restoration
is still in progress.)
