May 2004 - July 2004| Phase I
Roofing and Paint Removal

The South elevation (above) has a new roof. The
elevator penthouse remains in an effort to try and reuse the 100+ year
old lift for construction purposes.
As the paint removal process began (below left)
Western Waterproofing, the masonry restoration sub-contractor, tested
different mixes of the specified products to achieve maximum paint removal.

The paint removal process consisted of brushing on a chemical
substance, leaving it to sit on the surface for a specified time period,
and finally rinsing the paint away with a 3000 psi pressure washer (above
right). Care had to be taken to avoid damaging the remaining wood
windows and mortar joints.
As the paint removal process progressed, it was clear
that the best choice for the building's exterior had been made (below).

After removing enough of the paint to get a clear picture
of the natural brick and mortar color and texture, brick and mortar samples
were closely matched to provide a seamless look to the newly restored
and replaced masonry exterior (below).
